Shift#1, 2018

The photo installation "Shifts", consists of an anthropological series of photographs by Jaques Philippe Potteau that were collected at the Museum de Paris in the mid-19th century (1855-1869) as part of ethnographic studies. In “Shifts” the portraits of Potteau are manipulated by digital cuts and their displacement so that actual shifts in the photograph occur. Ultimately, this will make a scientific study, which intents to ‘measure’ the identity of a person by optical characteristics (anthropology), practically useless - the portrait/identity can no longer be measured by the anthropologist.
